Command Words
Know: State a fact, term or definition.
Understand: Explain how or why something works.
Be able to: Apply the knowledge or skill in a scenario.
Make judgements: Evaluate, compare and reach a conclusion.
Identify: Name or select the correct item.
Explain: Give reasons with supporting detail.
Describe: Give the key features in detail.
Evaluate: Weigh benefits and drawbacks, then conclude.
Time Management
1 mark approx. 1 minute. Use the mark allocation to judge how much to write.
- Read the full question before answering and find the command word.
- Do not overstay on low-mark questions.
- Leave time at the end to check answers.
- For example-based answers, be specific.
Paper 1 Tips (Problem Solving, Support, Data)
- Trace algorithms carefully and write every step.
- Use the correct flowchart symbols.
- State the data type and justify the choice.
- For tests, state purpose, data, and expected result.
- Link risk answers to likelihood and severity.

- Know the full name, purpose, and consequences of each act.
- Link digital systems to specific business benefits.
- Memorise the OSI layers and a protocol for each.
- Know the pros, cons, and use cases for star, mesh, and tree.
- Mention impact on organisations and individuals for emerging tech.
